A proper home-style lunch and sweet cottage cheese štruklji with breadcrumbs at Gostilna Murko

Slovenia's Koroška region is made for cycling. Its backbone is Štrekna, a 35 km paved rail trail between Velenje and Dravograd, separated from traffic and suitable for families. The trail runs through Slovenj Gradec, home to Gostilna Murko (Francetova cesta 24), a family-run inn since 1903.

1. Family ride: Slovenj Gradec – Mislinja and back

About 14 km each way. Towards Mislinja the trail climbs gently to the highest point of Štrekna (590 m); the way back is almost all downhill. Paved, car-free, with rest stops along the way. Ideal for a morning ride and lunch at Gostilna Murko when you return.

2. To the Drava: Slovenj Gradec – Dravograd and back

About 23 km round trip with almost no climbing. An easy ride for all ages to the Drava river and the old bridge in Dravograd, where Štrekna joins the Drava Cycling Route.

3. The full Štrekna: Velenje – Dravograd

35 km. From Velenje (411 m) the trail climbs gently through the Huda luknja gorge, with tunnels and viaducts, to Mislinja (590 m), then descends for about 25 km towards Slovenj Gradec and Dravograd (341 m). Slovenj Gradec comes in the second half of the ride, just in time for lunch. In the summer season the Štrekna bus with a bike trailer runs at weekends; check the timetable before you go.

4. Cross-border ride: to the bathing lake in Lavamünd

From Dravograd the cycle path continues for about 10 km on the Austrian side to the bathing lake by the Drava in Lavamünd (Labot). From Slovenj Gradec and back that is roughly 43 km of easy riding, with a swim in summer.

A cyclists' stop at Gostilna Murko

  • A safe place for bikes during the stop.

  • E-bikes can be charged at the inn; riders should bring their own charger.

  • Home-style Koroška cooking, including the house speciality, mežerli.

  • A break along Štrekna: the inn's Ginarnica distillery offers a light tasting of house-made spirits. Those riding on are better off taking a bottle with them.
